Males grow 7-8" (18 to 20 cm) in size and weigh up to, and over, 1,500 grams.
Females can grow 8-9" (20 to 23 cm) in size and weigh at least 2,000 grams.
High in fiber, rich in calcium, and low in protein. Weeds, broadleaf greens, flowers, optunia cactus and optunia fruit. Organic store-bought greens and Mazuri on occasion. No fruit - too high in sugars.
Shell coloration may be entirely black or may be yellowish with black mottling.
In the wild, this subspecies will brumate during colder months.
Able to withstand cooler temperatures.
